The Future of Mixed Reality for Fashion
First off here’s a short 101 on the differences: augmented reality is a parallel reality to enhance or modify objects whilst still seeing the current world around you, in contrast, for Virtual Reality, the users entire reality is substituted with an alternate reality. Mixed Reality on the other hand is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time.One of the strongest milestones for holographic fashion came in as early as 2006 when Alexander McQueen, pioneer of conceptual fashion, featured a ghostly hologram of Kate Moss in the finale of his ‘Widows of Culloden’ show in Paris. The projection appeared within a glass pyramid surrounded by white smoke effects.

However, surprisingly yet, one of the key companies for Holograms is a startup, not based in Sillicon Valley but the suburban areas of Florida, Magic Leap, “it’s a new technology which uses advanced light field signal which mimics how the world interfaces and talks with the human brain, creating synthetic material merging with real spaces.” says Rony Abovitz, Ceo of Magic Leap to WIRED media.
Right after Google invested in this startup, Alibaba tailed through with a $794 million USD in investment, then Morgan Stanley and Warner Bros also followed through. Rony states, his tech is not exactly VR or AR but a potential mix of both in which he calls MR (Mixed Reality) according to WIRED magazine; it’s a way of tricking the brain by cloning real signals and sending these digital signals to the brain.
HoloLens, by Microsoft, is also another key player in the market that are also investing billions of dollars into the project and has recently launched an extremely powerful AR system that blurs reality with virtual. This is when we know MR is becoming serious and going on another level.
MR seems so real because it detects fully your current landscape and adapts the the holograms according to your space which is usually created with hologram tech- HPU’s (holographic processing units). According to tested sources, the resolution and response rate was extremely quick and crisp, however for what concerns its limitations, sources stated it still needs more sophisticated gestures that can mimic real life intuitive gestures and the screen is extremely small, the viewing area is only available through a small box that cuts off if you get too close to the image ( some say its to avoid AR sickness).
However, one of the best features that I saw from a tech blogger on Youtube is that the MR technology completely maps out every item in the room in a perfectly accurate way over the space simply by clicking on a specific area, where you can get different shapes and sizes, this is also potentially applicable to real life 3D human scans for the fashion industry making mass customization go in real time…..OMG SO AWSOME!
Needless to say that were entering an amazing era of tech, TV’s and physical computers will become antiquated. 3D spaces, blurring the real with virtual and having access to much more immediate internet data and information than before will enter our daily lives.
