MFW Nomadic Futurism – Ricostru
MFW SS18-The Armor of Second Skin
Over the recent seasons, we’ve seen the futuristic trend grow stronger every year as it becomes increasingly more relevant with the social and tech trends were currently living in: Nomadic tech travellers, the rise of artificial intelligence, augmented reality, monopoly of cashless systems, and our world of materialism.
Ricostru’s spring summer 2018 collection follows the concept of “second skin” nomadic futurism; Pure and sheer metallic hues, nude whites, bold bronze, armed like silhouettes and surreal “metal skin” creating an armor effect that seemed to convey the need for protection against hard times, maybe a symbol for the globalized uncertainties were living in today.
A small hint of tribalism mixed almost soft-cyber like references seemed to represent the theme of nomadic futurism, showcasing battleship and survival of the fittest theory.
Metallic suits reminding me of meta-robotic armory, silver pants, metal net shaped like chains made by tech-knitwear, black matrix like outerwear suits, see-through and elastic tops combined with high-rise underwear created futuristic athleisure looks that were paired with clean sneakers. These were the main details that stood out of the runway to present the holistic effect of surreal “metal skin” protection.
Survival of the Fittest
In times like now, we often feel the need for protection where the thought of having second layers of artificial metal can make us feel invincible, this has been a human fantasy for centuries; to live and travel through time while feeling immortal from danger (youth documentary in Italy). Ricostru evoked an illusion of our current humanity where the need to “mask” or camouflage ourselves is needed for survival. Socially today, we’re living with more technology, information, and convenience than ever before, however we are in more doubt and anxious than ever before being slaves to our phone and social media, political powers, and modern global attacks.
Dividing nations and cultures due to wars and terrorist attacks have hit a number of cities in the last years increasing the feeling of anxiety and danger where uncertainty of the unknown has unfortunately become a hindrance in today’s world. A need for security, even if it being an illusion, for the sake of having the sense of protection, is more important has become more important ever before.
